Tips to study Mathematics.

Mathematics is the Queen of the Science Stream. Albert Einstein said, “Do not worry too much about your difficulty in mathematics, I can assure you that mine are still greater.” Here are some tips to perform well in Mathematics:

1. Complete the textbook (NCERT) problems, preferably by completing the examples initially and then the exercise.

2. Learn ahead of your classes, even if you don't understand some concepts. You can get the doubts clarified through your Tutor.

3. Write down the formulas and the facts in your notebook after the class is over. Revise with these 15-20 minutes everyday.

4. Work out the problems everyday even if there is no homework in Maths. This will give you lot of practice.

5. Don't skip the steps while working out the problems.

6. Approach the problems by understanding their real time applications in life. This will help you understand the logic and the concept clearly.

7. Also approach the problems by drawing a rough sketch to help you easily arrive at the solution.

8. Use the bottom-up approach in problem solving. Figure out what they are asking and work upwards with it.

For example, If they require you to find the total surface area of the combination of a cylinder and a cone attached together, write down

Total surface area = Curved surface area of cylinder + Curved surface area of cone

So now you know that you need both the curved surface areas. Then write, curved surface area of cylinder = 2πrh and curved surface area of cone = πrl. So if l is not given, you need to find l.

So you've figured out how to solve the problem: find l, find both the curved surface area and then find the total surface area.

9. Once you've solved the textbook problems, you can solve Goyal Assignments and RD Sharma book problems. You can also solve high level thinking problems using books like ML Khanna or Arihant Series.

10. Practice the previous year question papers & IIT JEE papers too.

11. Use Google/Apps/Videos/Animations to understand the concepts more clearly.

12. Take help from your teacher or hire a tutor or go to a Coaching Institute where individual attention is given. Show them your work and get it corrected and discuss the errors with them everyday.
